CERS European Mens Finals
On 28th November 2008 the Hornets competed in the Mens European cup in Rethel France. We had the most difficult of draws playing our first game against the three time winners and home side Elite Rethel Ardennes. The Hornets competed hard against a very strong French team but after holding our own in the early exchanges the superior finishing of the French and a particularly strong performance by their American import, the Hornets fell to a 9-1 defeat. The score line in many ways did little to reflect the performance and did flatter the French as the Hornets battled to the end.
29th November saw us pitched against local rivals and travelling companions Norton who entered a side full of young guns. This was a typical game between these two teams with Hornets emerging as 3-1 victors despite a spirited second period display by Norton.
30th November and our final game saw us play Zug Razorbacks for 5th and 6th place with Hornets finishing 5-2 winners and worthy winners at that. The game was to some extent marred by comedy refereeing which at times saw more of both sides in the penalty box than on the bench. This was not a dirty game it was just spoiled by poor refereeing.
So Hornets finished as high as possible after the defeat by Rethel with a well earned 5th position with Norton 8th.
